What we have been up to in 2023

This year has been a funny year! We have been kept busy and away from the waterways for all sorts of reasons. The year started badly, with Liana’s lovely mum Flo passing away after a short illness at the grand age of 92. She was able to live alone, being fiercely independent, and kept her faculties, thankfully. Her eyesight and hearing had become very poor, but she saw , video called and had regular visits from her children and grandchildren, who adored her. God Bless her and Eddie, who are together now.

Liana has spent many, many hours as chief executor , sorting out information for the myriads of forms, with some help from her fellow executors. Her sister and Sarah have helped sort things in her house. The inheritance tax people managed to lose all these forms, despite signing for their receipt, so months later, Liana has been printing out and filling in a replacement set of forms. Just what you want when you are grieving.

We have loved travelling to see our children and grandchild Hope. We stay in Wales for up to a week, usually , about once a month, babysitting Hope. Her parents are both keen mountain bikers!  She is now two years old, and her talking is coming on weekly! We love being grandparents, taking her swimming, for walks and to the village toddlers group.

All three daughters have been busy remodelling their houses, while very busy with their professional careers in education and the NHS. Sarah has just achieved a first class MBA in Education, and is now enjoying a well deserved holiday. Jo has been busy fitting in child rearing, mountain biking competitions and house improvement with her doctoring.

Rachel has just completed a week feeding around a hundred young adults on their annual church camp. She’s a great cook, and a NHS dietitian, so she knows her stuff!

John has been busy working on church, bell ringing and Lions projects, including a schools gardening competition to encourage our young gardeners. Annie has been feeling her age. She will be 18 years old in September, and things are wearing out: We know how she feels! We bought a new efficient refrigerator last year. John has fitted a new expensive  charger/inverter plus new lithium batteries, which has been educational! The hospital exhaust silencer, dish washer and oven need replacing, too. We are investigating getting her repainted, and have ordered new cratch cover and rear pram top cover to replace the old, shrunken cratch cover and rear tonneau cover.

John ‘lost’ June due to having his successful cataract operation. He now has a High Definition eye!! Boat repairs, babysitting and our friends’ wedding kept us busy until August. Liana was a Maid of Honour, and much fun was had.

Finally, we set off from the Chesterfield Canal up the Trent, through Newark and Nottingham to Shardlow, where we are now, sheltering from the rain!
