Monday 17 July Great Barford back
to St Neots (9 miles, 3 locks)
Beautiful, sunny weather today and tomorrow! After watching a
canoeist inflate his canoe, we set off down Great Barford Lock under
the hot sun, and took our time travelling down this lovely stretch of
river, enjoying the idyll. Dropping down Roxton Lock, we looked at
all the boats at Kelpie Marine, by the two A1 bridges, old and new.
We eased past Wyboston Leisure Park, with its lakes and busy golf
course. John noticed that the arm 400m before Eaton Socon lock, just
before the weir, now seemed to be the start of a long marina, like a
river, with a lift bridge which needed raising to access it. He could
see a narrowboat and several cruisers moored by new houses, all not
shown on the old Imray map. A job for googlemaps, maybe? At Eaton
Socon Lock, we chatted to people walking past and viewed the small
marina. Reaching St Neots, we moored on the public moorings opposite
the Priory Centre, next to the friendly campers we had seen last week
and the pleasant couple sunning themselves by cruiser Catsteps, who
have a lovely blue/grey Schnauzer dog. Time to visit the town!
