Saturday 15 August Keadby to Thorne 11 miles, 1 lock
Sunday 16 August in Thorne
As it was showery, we just relaxed, read and had a walk around Thorne
Monday 17 August Thorne to Stainforth and through Sykehouse Lock 9 miles, 1 lock
With the toilet more or less working, with an on/off switch, something else could now go wrong, and it did: The drive to the propeller seemed to become intermittent, so John started thinking. Was it water in the fuel? No, because the engine sounded reasonable. Throttle cable? Rattling but probably okish. That leaves clutch/gearbox. As it’s a PRM150 gearbox, it could well be short of oil. John idled Annie along through Sykehouse Lock, where Liana had to open the swing bridge over the lock before operating the electrics on this huge lock.
Once through Sykehouse Lock, we moored up on the quieter side of the cut, before Kirk Lane Lift Bridge.
Tuesday 18 August From after Sykehouse Lock to Pollington Lock on the Aire and Calder Canal
Once the rain stopped, John got his overalls on, found his Allen keys and had a look at the engine control mechanism. All seemed ok, so it was down into the engine compartment to check the oil. Yep, the gearbox needed topping up - considering it was over full last time I looked, this was unexpected but true. Off we went, Liana working Kirk Lane Lift Bridge, the only one today. The Went Aqueduct was one of several we passed over next.
At Southfield Junction, we passed a moored boat and turned left onto the main Aire and Calder, away from Goole. After a couple of miles, we took on water and moored just before Pollington Lock about 5pm.
As it was wine o’ clock, we chilled for the evening, chatted on the iPhone to daughter Sarah and watched the tv. “Our Yorkshire Farm” is our current favourite tv, followed by Bridget Jones, now aged 43.
