North Oxford Canal

Monday 21 September Barby to Ansty 14 miles, 3 locks)

The day dawned very misty.  The sun gradually broke through, as we approached Hillmorton Locks, with the new Rugby suburb of Houston still being built on the right. Volunteers helped us down these double locks.

Liana counted forty boats moving on the canal today, quieter than at the weekend but still quite busy.

At Newbold and at Rugby, the tree growth on the offside was so bad that only one boat could pass the moored boats at a time.

Newbold Tunnel is only about 200 metres long, with walkways both sides, although only one side is used now. There is a second unused canal tunnel under the churchyard!

Liana opened the swing bridge at Stretton Stop.

Once under the M6, we moored at Ansty, where the quiet moorings are away from railway and motorway.
